I don't know, why people always emphasize this. DDD is useful all the time (understanding the business, context, common language, …), even in small projects, BUT you don't need all of it all the time. DDD is not a dogma to follow blindly (wouldn't even know how to describe that).

PS: reading the DDD books once is not enough
